Police said that at about noon, the victim left their car on and unlocked with about eight puppies inside in the 1700 block of U St. Southeast.

Officers said the victim had their car keys with them.

"I really hope they find them," said Tearia Watkins, whose mother lives near where the crime happened.

This is the second known case involving a stolen dog in the District in less than a week.

Police reunited "Lola" with her owner on Wednesday. They said someone brought the dog to the police station after two suspects took her on New Year's Eve after they attacked her owner inside her Southeast home.

Police are still looking for the suspects in both incidents.

"I don't know if people are selling them for profit or if people are just, you know, wanting to make pets from somebody else's pet. I'm not sure," Watkins said.

Anyone with information is asked to call D.C. Police.

President Biden speaks on the eve of the anniversary of the Jan. 6th attack https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/washington-dc/president-biden-speaks-on-the-eve-of-the-anniversary-of-the-jan-6th-attack/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:11:31 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688414 Saturday marks three years since the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.  President Joe Biden spoke in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on the eve of the anniversary warning voters that democracy is on the line in this year's presidential election.

This is President Biden’s first campaign speech of the year, where he narrowed in on GOP frontrunner, former president Donald Trump, warning what could happen if he is re-elected.

Biden took direct aim at the former president for his role in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“He told a crowd to fight like hell and all hell was unleashed,” he said.

The president says what should have been a peaceful transition of power turned into an unprecedented attack on our democracy.

“Trump’s mob wasn’t peaceful protests. It was a violent assault,” he added.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland vowed to continue prosecuting the people accused of storming the Capitol.

“On that day, officers were punched, tackled, and tased as they defended the Capitol and those inside,” he said.

In a press conference on Friday, Maryland Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin warned Trump could try to overturn the election again if he loses the 2024 race.

“Donald Trump is out there saying he will issue a pardon to the more than 700 people who are convicted,” he said.

But Trump fired back, posting on his social media platform Friday that "Biden is a threat to democracy."

Former President Trump will spend Saturday in Iowa where he is scheduled to hold two separate campaign rallies.

Dry January has benefits, challenges https://www.dcnewsnow.com/whats-going-around/dry-january-has-benefits-challenges/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:09:20 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1688397 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The new year means new resolutions.

One of the more popular resolution is to quit drinking for the first month of the year, otherwise known as Dry January.

It started as a social media movement that has exploded in popularity. Dry January is meant to encourage people to rethink their relationship with alcohol, take a break from it and become aware of their drinking habits.

The month-long feat to be sober has health benefits, according to Dr. Elspeth Ritchie, chair of Psychiatry at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

“It's going to depend on the person, but there's really no downside unless you're heavily addicted, in which case you should consult a medical professional so you'll feel better about yourself.

Ritchie said it could also help with weight loss.

"You'll likely have more of a spring in your step and you'll know that you can do it,” she said.

Ritchie said there are challenges, though, for some people partaking in Dry January.

“One [has] the ability to stop drinking. That can be harder than you think, especially if it's built into your social life or into a habit," she said. "Another challenge can be difficult to get into sleep. Often when people stop drinking, it becomes tough for them to fall asleep."

Dry January can be dangerous for some who give up booze, particularly heavy drinkers who can experience withdrawal. Symptoms include tremors in the hand, shakes and sweating.

"The best thing to do is to talk to your physician or other medical professional If you're going to do it and are worried that you might have withdrawal. You might be able to get some medications to help with withdrawal. There's also medications that help with craving, and that might be right for you as well,” Ritchie said.
