A jury in West Virginia has reached a verdict for a mother who killed her two young sons by setting fire to their beds as her husband slept back in January of 2017.
Molly Delgado, 30, of Falling Waters, West Virginia, is to serve two consecutive terms of life in prison without mercy.
Delgado is convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for killing Justin Delgado Jr., 5, and Delmer Delgado, 3, after individually setting the comforters to their beds on fire in their trailer home on 58 Cracked Walnut Way.
During court proceedings, she was found responsible for her actions at the time. Assistant State Fire Marshal George Harms said she confessed to the arson.
After setting the fires the night of January 24, 2017, she locked her family inside and walked off with the key and dog across the street to her mother’s home.
Her now ex-husband Justin Delgado Sr, was awakened by the smoke. He called for help through a window, and after managed to escape.
Investigators said ultimately, Justin Jr. and Delmer both died from burns to their body, but that Delmar Delgado also was sedated with high doses of cough syrup. Both boys were pronounced dead at the scene.
And two years later, Molly Delgado’s motive is still unclear.
“She never disclosed a motive. Certainly there was conjecture about what was going on in her life at the time, so we have some testimony regarding that, but she didn’t disclose a motive to anyone,” said Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Catie Wilkes Delligatti.
The judge ordered Molly Delgado to serve her two life sentences consecutively.
She is currently being held at Eastern Regional Jail.
